The justice system is an essential part of any peaceful democracy. Those trained in criminal justice are responsible for maintaining safety and ensuring justice for those who choose to break the law. Criminal justice college students spend their time in college studying the ins and outs of the legal system. Some will take classes in person, but the program is also popular with students pursuing a distance learning education degree. Their coursework can be difficult, but it is always interesting and engaging. The specific classes will vary from one criminal justice college to another, but all programs share the same basic core studies:

Criminal Law

This class focuses on the rules and laws relating to crime and what the consequences are for those who breach the law. Students will also learn why certain laws are put in place and how they ensure the safety and wellbeing of the public.

Criminology

Drawing on the research of sociologists and psychologists, criminology looks at the causes of criminal behavior. By understanding the conditions that cause criminal behavior, students are better able to determine solutions to those problems.

Law Enforcement

Obviously, it is important to know what the laws are and what causes criminals to break them. But this knowledge will not do criminal justice majors any good if they do not know how to enforce the laws. Law enforcement class looks at the different ways in which laws are enforced and which techniques are most effective.

Correctional Systems

Part of law enforcement is providing a consequence to law violations. For more severe crimes, the offender may have to be held in the correctional system for the safety of the community. In a course on correctional systems, students learn the purpose of jails and prisons and how they can be used to deter crime.

Criminal Investigation

Unfortunately, it is not always immediately clear who committed any given crime. To discover the identity of the offender, professionals must piece together evidence. Criminal investigation courses focus on the methods of finding evidence and how to piece the evidence together in order to identify the criminal.
