| To be a good teacher one requires commitment and passion in the areas one is teaching in. It is the only way you can reap maximum results from learners and fulfillment from the profession. Passion in the subject area of teaching enables you as teacher to give learners the best knowledge and skills that is in your possession. It requires you to be a teacher who keeps interesting yourself in the area of study and you can do this by continuous acquisition of new knowledge through reading or even seeking further training in your area of interest. Doing this enables one to sharpen their teaching skills with the benefit of leaving them a highly knowledgeable teacher in the area of specialization. To be a teacher who is appreciated, you need to know how to train and not drill your students. Drilling students involves forcing them to cram and memorize subjects for purposes of passing their examinations. A good teacher aims at training for excellence. While having students pass tests is a good thing, a good teacher puts emphasis on developing their students by having them master the subjects by way of understanding and not cramming lessons they are taught in their heads. Why teach if you cannot have a positive influence in the future lives of your students? Rather why teach and have your students pass your class only to fail in subsequent classes or training because you were not able to pass on the knowledge and skills they required in a way that they could understand. Be a teacher who can connect with your students. Strive to have a personal touch in your teaching, give each student attention, and special attention to those who need it. Be patient and keenly observe and understand each of your students to recognize their needs. You should be able to follow up on how your learners respond and their progress. This may involve the use of assessment tests, questions you raise during classes and one on one discussion with the students. It is also not just about teaching but doing so in an interesting way that students enjoy. Be humorous in your lessons. We have all heard of cases or even experienced teachers who were so boring that students just doze off and start snoring in class or start drawing cartoons in books. Be a teacher who can engage the students in a fun way. Challenge them mentally so that their minds are at work in a good way. Let your students actively participate. Crack jokes or teach in a way that interests them and catches their attention. We all remember some nice jokes or quotes from those teachers who really engaged us in one way or another in class. Teaching credentials should not be limited to academic credentials. Remind yourself and always ask yourself the question; why teach this? This question will always remind you to keep in mind the objective you intend to achieve at the end of the class. Aaron Jeffery is the author of this article on Be A Teacher.
