There are facts about the brain that is not only fascinating but also useful. These facts relate around things concerning mental health and general fitness of the brain. Cognitive research shows that being aware of the brain and how it functions is one of the major steps to maintaining a healthy state of your mind. One of the facts that you need to know about your mind is that it is affected by what you eat. Many people may not be quick to find a connection between eating and thinking. Although, research shows that certain foods are known to improve general mental health and reduce instances of some brain disorders such as dementia. These foods should therefore be included in the diet as frequently as possible. Tomatoes are one of them; they contain a chemical that has been found to reduce instances of cell damage associated with Alzheimer. Eating fish which has omega 3 oils as well as iodine is known to help maintain mental health and improve mental clarity. Reducing the amount of processed food you take also goes a long way in reducing memory loss. This is because whole grain foods which contain folic acid and some vitamin B have been known to improve memory. However, if these whole grains are processed some of these nutrients are lost hence the encouragement to eat unprocessed food stuffs. Fruits such as blue berries and black currants have vitamins that improve short term memory and improve brain fitness. Another interesting fact about your brain is that, just like your body, it requires exercise and training too so that it can keep healthy. Many people think that staying healthy is about body exercises and rarely do you find anyone thinking about mental exercises. However, this should not be the case; one should engage the mind in exercises to keep it alert and fit. There are a number of exercises and mind games that are designed to help you do this. One of them is by engaging in a new and yet challenging activity that will help activate your mind. For example, you can take up a foreign language, start attending classes and learn the language fluently. This will not only be fun but your brain also gets to start thinking and reasoning in another language which is very good exercise for the mind. You can also travel to a place you have never been before and use a map to get around, or even closer home, you can decide to take a new route to work one day. This will be a great way of memory training since your mind does not get used to only one line of thinking. Diversity is very important when t comes to mental health. Other forms of mental exercises are playing mind games such as puzzles, chess, bridge and card games. These are fun way to improve your mental health and still have fun while you are at it. Another fun thing you can try is to use your other hand to write, if you are right handed, you can try to use your left hand once in a while.
