Since time immemorial, the hazardous effect of smoking has been made public by health activists, doctors and even advertisers themselves. But for some reasons the number of smokers is still increasing at a higher rate. The major effect of smoking is lung cancer. Non smokers only take up as little as 15 percent of lung cancer cases. Most smokers realize the effect of smoking and now embark on trying to find easy ways to quit smoking. First of all to quit smoking is not an easy task since cigarettes contain nicotine that is highly addictive and this is what causes people to go back to it after they decide to quit smoking.

Determination and focus are the two things needed by the smoker if he or she is ever going to get over the nicotine addiction and eventually quit smoking. You must decide to stop smoking once and for all. Otherwise if you put it off for a while then go back to it, chances are you will not be successful and you will eventually go back to smoking. Luckily several methods have been devised to help those who are willing to stop smoking, some are health related and others are purely mind over matter; nonetheless they all have high success rates.

One such method is to quit smoking gradually. You can be able to successfully stop smoking by slowly reducing the amount of cigarette sticks you smoke on a daily basis. You will do this till the number eventually reached zero. You can trick your brain into thinking that it needs less and less nicotine on a daily basis. If you are to use this method then you need to ensure that the day the number of sticks you are smoking finally hits zero should be not more than two weeks away from the day you decide to stop smoking.

Ever heard the term ‘no man is an island’, well it also applies when you want to stop smoking. This means that you cannot do it yourself and you should therefore seek support from your friends and family. They will help you quit smoking the best way they know how. You can also seek medical advice, visit a doctor and let them highlight to you the negative effects of smoking such as lung cancer and to prescribe medication that may help to flush out the nicotine from your body. This will help you to stop smoking.

The most important thing if you are to successfully quit smoking is to keep your mind off it. Try as much as possible to put your focus elsewhere other than smoking by looking for diversions. All the above methods make it quite clear that it is indeed possible to quit smoking if you really want to. Most people say they cannot quit smoking due to one reason or the other. But the major question you need to ask yourself is whether that reason you are holding on to so dearly is worth dying for.
