| The word rhinoplasty is a mixture of two Greek words ‘rhinos’ which means nose and ‘plassein’ which means ‘to shape’. It is a surgical procedure performed in order to improve the appearance or function of a person’s nose by modifying its shape or size. Although rhinoplasty originated in ancient India, modern rhinoplasty was first done by Johann Dieffenbach and Jacques Joseph by using external incisions for nose reduction surgery. In 1973, Dr Wilfred S. Goodman initiated the method of open rhinoplasty and later in 1987 Dr. Jack P. Gunter popularized this method by using it for secondary rhinoplasty. This procedure is one of the most common surgical procedures and has various benefits. It can be done for cosmetic purposes like for simply changing the shape of the tip of the bridge, narrowing the span of nostrils or changing the angle between the upper lip and the nose. It can also correct other things like an aesthetically unpleasant nose, birth defects, and injuries caused by accidents. The procedure can be used to treat various conditions like breathing problems, chronic stuffiness, post-nasal drip and snoring. Primary rhinoplasty is the first time surgical procedure on a patient which can restore skin coverage, recreate normal contours, and re-establish nasal airflow. In case of deformation by traumatic accidents it can also allow re-shaping of the displaced bony humps and re-alignment of the nasal bones. Most people achieve the desired result after undergoing the primary surgical procedure. A secondary surgical procedure can be done on people who want to correct unsatisfactory conditions developed from the previous procedure or simply want to improve their looks. Only a small percentage of people require secondary or revision rhinoplasty. The process is much more complicated than the primary one and doctors have to use the open method so they can directly visualize the problem. There is also a third non surgical way of rhinoplasty where certain substances are injected to transform the shape or size of the nose. However the results are not permanent and the procedure must again be done after six to seven months. Before you choose to have the procedure done the most important thing is to find a good surgeon. You should fix an appointment initially for consultation and ask him whether he feels that you are a good candidate for the surgery. Also get details surgery related information like recovery time etc. You should tell him clearly what outcome you expect from the procedure. After the surgery you will be recommended a 24 hour hospital stay and you may be prescribed antibiotics, pain and steroid medications. Surgeons will prescribe cold compressions and recommend that you stay away from direct sunlight. External casts can be removed after a week while internal stents can take from four days to two weeks to remove. Although rhinoplasty is considered one of the safest and effective procedures, like all other surgeries unpredictable complications can arise here too.
