| When many people think of bringing up a lawsuit against a major company for personal injury or damages, they think of immediate cause and effect situations. The grocery store fails to de-ice the sidewalk, so someone falls and breaks their hip. Even in pharmaceutical cases, the cause and effect are normally closely related in time. A woman taking birth control pills gets a blood clot while she’s still on the pills. Sometimes, though, cause and effect are separated by a number of hours, days, or even years. In the case of Accutane lawsuits, this is often the case. What Accutane Does Accutane is a drug manufactured by Roche Pharmaceuticals. It was originally created to be part of cancer treatment, as it can kill off certain cancer cells or at least stunt their growth. When researchers found that the drug had a nearly miraculous effect on chronic cystic acne, they started developing it to treat this problem, as well. The drug basically closes off the oil ducts in the skin, making oily, acne-prone skin suddenly dry and clear. This drug has several short-term side effects. For this reason, many doctors only prescribed it as an absolute last resort against cystic acne. In the short term, it can cause severe dryness of the skin, among other problems. The Accutane long term side effects, though, are what have really caused problems for Roche. This medication was known, when it was released, to exacerbate certain digestive problems. What no one told doctors and patients, though, was that it could actually cause such problems in otherwise healthy individuals with few or no risk factors for developing such diseases. The problems caused by Accutane include Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis. These are essentially the same disease – an inflammation of bowel tissues – located at different areas of the digestive track. Each disease is long-term, has no effective cure, and can have a major impact on the life of the sufferer. Lawsuits Years Later One of the weird things about Accutane IBD and other diseases is that they may not appear until years after the patient has been off of the medication. In fact, it seems that some patients can develop diseases even if they were only on Accutane for a few weeks. Normally, this is what happens, since the drug is typically only used for short-term treatment. Because many Accutane side effects don’t appear until years later, lawsuits against Roche Pharmaceuticals are ongoing, even though the drug was pulled off the market in 2009. If you or someone you love has ever taken Accutane and has subsequently developed a major bowel disease or syndrome, you may be able to get recompense through a lawsuit. Right now, all the suits against Accutane are individual suits, and many are winning their individual cases. Some people, though, are starting to think of joining together for a class action lawsuit. This could be easier and more cost effective for most of the involved parties, and it may be just the solution you’re looking for.
