Retail shops, cloth stores and hospitals, hotels etc, need billing of the goods and services offered. For billing previously hand written bills are given and the consumer used to pay cash. Previously stores used to maintain large registers to note down the daily sales and the value and quantity are written. But now the improved technology has computerized these registers. Electronic Cash Register is used now everywhere for the purpose of billing the goods and services that are sold. These are the devices connected to computers for recording all cash transactions and calculate the tax on the products. They can read the bar codes of different products and gives the customer a printed bill. These registers are made by different companies in different models. These are available in different colors usually black and white with a box of rolls free. Some models provide free software also. The devices have cash drawer attached to them to store the cash. This will be opened after the sales for the day are completed with special key which is in the possession of the employer. This prevents the employees from stealing. In fact this register was first introduced to check employee theft. Some of these registers need a special password or a special key to open the drawer. They are attached to barcode scanners or scales. Now these are replaced by a computer which contains the point of sale software. Now they are the cash tills which are run on Windows or UNIX operating systems. These machines now perform many functions. They scan the barcode, calculate the discounts on products, calculate the sales tax, they stamp the date and time of transaction, calculate the total items sold with their prices and the total amount from the sales of that day. Some of these devices are powered by batteries. The registers and drawers are suitable to be connected to PCs. Some models of the drawers are connected to a PC and some are connected to a receipt printer and are opened by using the software of the printer. If the user wants a drawer without any connection to the PC, such models are also supplied and these can be opened with a special key. Now the computer at the point of sale counter does the functions of the register and drawer. The printer connected to the computer works with the POS software. The computer at the point of sale is intended to avoid theft by the persons at the cash counter. The computer is connected to the POS network and with the installation of this system the data of the sales can be retrieved from remote points. Thus, it effectively checks the fraud at the cash counters and helps in smooth functioning. Maintaining the registers and the issuing bills to the consumers has become fast and error free with the installation of POS software and it greatly reduces fraud by employees. Thus, the electronic cash registers of the present day help in effective sales operations.
