| As a woman ages, several changes take place in her body. Changes are not confined to adolescence and unfortunately, the changes that come about with old age are not so pleasant. Apart from the psychological aging such as memory loss, slurred speech and loss of sight, a lot of physical and more noticeable changes take place such as wrinkling and sagging, and weakening of the bones among others. Unfortunately, these do not just take place on the surface of the body that we can see but also in other organs of a woman’s body such as the vagina. Aging can result in conditions that are embarrassing and very uncomfortable and the pelvic mesh failure has not made the situation any better. These conditions include the Pelvic Organ Prolapse. The POP as it is popularly called affects women of mature age. The condition causes the weakening of the vaginal muscles and sagging of the vagina. These are some of the symptoms exhibited by a patient suffering from the Pelvic Organ Prolapse: Feeling some pressure on the lower abdomen Engorgement of the urethra, cervix, rectum, and bladder so that one feels as though they are hanging out Discomfort during bowel movement and urination Pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse Another condition is Stress Urinary Incontinence. This occurs when the pelvic floor muscles weaken therefore making the patient pass urine involuntarily. It can be easily prompted by cases such as sneezing, coughing, or laughing. It is also very uncomfortable since the patient may be subject to bad body odour or may resort to the use of adult diapers, which is embarrassing for anyone. The symptoms are much worse when the conditions advance so one should seek treatment as soon as possible. As you grow older, there may be recurrence or the condition could simply worsen so ensure that your choice of treatment is long term. Many people opt for non surgical options while to some; surgical pelvic mesh operations may be necessary depending on the stage of the condition despite the pelvic mesh failure. In pelvic mesh surgical treatment, a device is inserted into the vagina to administer anterior and posterior vaginal treatment. The device helps to strengthen the muscles and ultimately results in the elimination of the above mentioned symptoms hence allowing you to lead a healthy life. That is what the treatment entailed until the pelvic mesh failure occurred. Unfortunately, there has been an alert by the FDA for transvaginal mesh recall by any patient who had gone through the procedure and suffered pelvic mesh failure. Apparently, there has been an increase in the side effects associated with the procedure, which have brought about complications instead of curing the condition. Some of these complications include: Recurring of the condition whether it was POP or SUI Urinary complications Infections on the affected areas. Erosion of the vaginal epithelium and many more. The complications vary depending on the patient but it is strongly advised that anyone experiencing pelvic mesh failure through the above symptoms should seek help from their surgeon and related bodies in order to correct the procedure and the complications, and for possible compensation. If you are suffering due to pelvic mesh failure, you should know that you are not alone. Mark Spearman is the author of this article on Transvaginal Mesh Recall.
