World Series MVPs Any discussion about major league baseball players who have been named the Most Valuable Player of the World Series should begin with the three players who won the award twice: Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson and Reggie Jackson. Koufax won the World Series MVP in 1963 and 1965 pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the 1963 World Series, Koufax went 2-0 with two complete games and 23 strikeouts as the Dodgers swept the New York Yankees in four games. He allowed only three earned runs in 18 innings. He struck out 15 batters in Game 1, which was a World Series record at the time. In the 1965 World Series, Koufax went 2-1 with two shutouts as the Dodgers defeated the Minnesota Twins in seven games. Koufax struck out 29 batters and allowed only one earned run in 24 innings. He pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the Dodgers to a 2-0 victory in Game 7. Gibson was named the World Series MVP in 1964 and 1967 pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals. In the 1964 World Series, Gibson went 2-1 in three starts with one complete game as the Cardinals defeated the Yankees in seven games. He struck out 31 batters, which was a World Series record at the time. In the 1967 World Series, Gibson went 3-0 with three complete games and 26 strikeouts, allowing only three earned runs and 14 hits in 27 innings as St. Louis beat the Boston Red Sox in seven games. Jackson earned World Series MVP honors in 1973 with the Oakland Athletics and in 1977 as a member of the Yankees. Jackson remains the only player to have been named MVP of the World Series with two separate teams. In the 1973 World Series, Jackson went 9-for-29 (.310 batting average) with one home run and six RBIs as Oakland beat the New York Mets in seven games. Jackson`s home run came in Game 7, which Oakland won 5-2. In the 1977 World Series, Jackson belted five home runs as the Yankees beat the Dodgers in six games. Three of his homers came in Game 6 at Yankee Stadium, each on the first pitch. This performance cemented Jackson`s reputation as baseball`s "Mr. October." During these years, World Series tickets were really hard to buy, season ticket holders had a strangle hold on their prize possession. Although the first World Series took place in 1903, official MVPs were not named until 1955, when starting pitcher Johnny Podres of the Brooklyn Dodgers won the inaugural MVP award.
